149 Cub Cadet Choking Problem
Hi guys
I got a 1971 149 cub cadet. My problem is that it will only start and run even after being warmed up at full choke. If you strat to push the choke in the engine starts puttering and then will die usually within 10 secs or so. I do know that if the fuel is not shut off after use gas will leak out of the carburetor. I do not know if these two things are connected. So my thoughts are the float is messed up and that why it leaks fuel but I have no idea why it will only run fully choked. Before I tore into my carburetor wanted to check here if anyone has any idea of what could be wrong. Thanks |

If it is leaking/flooding, the needle valve/inlet valve controlled by the float is either worn or has crud/chit under it.
And the fact that it runs better chocked indicates it has partial blockages in the internal passages. Take it off and clean things inside. Make sure you remove the emulsion tube and clean up the many small holes in it. If it is original/unmolested, best to get a inexpensive carb kit that contains a needle/seat and a few gaskets. Some find it beneficial to soak in pinesol a day or so. Use your air hose to make sure the fuel inlet elbow is clean by blowing both ways. Upon re instillation, make sure you have a good fuel flow from the fuel tank before you carefully insert the fuel line paying attention not to allow the inside of the fuel line to introduce more chit/crud into yer clean carb. Adjust idle speed as well as slow air bleed and high speed main jet as per service manual you downloaded free from here. |

You prolly got crap in the carburetor that's messing the float and blocking the orifices. The float has little/ nothing to do with carburetor tuning...it merely regulates the level of fuel in the bowl. With fuel in the bowl, the carb meters proper fuel and air mixture to the engine.
Pull the carb and clean it.

I would also pull the gas tank and spiffy it all up. Replace your fuel lines as well ( cheap insurance). It doesn't do any good to get your carb all cleaned up and then send junk from your tank right back into the carb. Once you get that all done you have eliminated that variable for any problems down the road.
Good Luck Ken |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
