Default 60” Mower Deck Problem

Mower deck leaves a 6”/8” uncut strip dead center of the deck. Deck hasn’t been damaged, center spindle runs as should, belt isn’t new but not wore either. Blades are new, zero hours on them. High engine rpm low engine rpm deck high or low makes no difference. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Did you put the center blade on upside down? Seen it before.

Only other thing I can think of is the center roller is rolling the grass down.

The bottom of the roller is about flush with the bottom of the deck but I’ll remove it and see if that changes anything. Thanks

Default Deck Problem

Please post some pictures showing the top and the underside of your deck. Are your belts installed correctly...all spindles turning in the same direction?

All three blades are installed properly, all spindles turning clockwise looking from the top. I don’t think the belt could be installed wrong are still run. When I bought it a few months ago the snowblower was attached and the deck off. I cleaned and rust proofed the bottom and installed the blades. I’m doing some small repairs to the blower now and still have the deck installed, not a great time to remove it for pictures. Making tire chains to fit and mounting wheel weights today.

ETA: Removed center roller, still same issue. In all fairness to the machine what I’m cutting isn’t a lawn. 99% of what I’m mowing is 12” tall or better.

ETA again: My son suggested I try mowing something a civilized person would mow, cuts as it should. I wouldn’t go as far as saying it was operator abuse but it was operator abuse.

Default Mower Deck Problem

If you are cutting down a field, you should probably have a "brush hog" instead of a 60" deck to knock it down first!! You are asking a lot of your old Cub to tackle grass (and whatever) that is a foot high...especially with that huge deck!

Once you have your lot cut down to a reasonable height, your Cub should do a good job keeping it under control...

I agree. It’s not thick grass just patches of tall grass.

For such stuff I raise the deck for the first 'slow' pass then I go over it again if I want it to look nicer.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
