Right colors, wrong brand

I picked up a Sears SS/16 today. A friend of my dads saw it for sale over the weekend and asked if I was interested. $100, ran when parked, how could I say no? Only problem, I was away on vacation, and it would most likely be sold before I got back, so he went over and paid for it. We went over this morning to pick it up. The previous owner’s uncle bought it new, and it sounds like it was mostly used for plowing snow. He said it should run, you just have to tap the starter with a hammer, it probably needs brushes. I don’t know how long it was sitting, but I guess it probably needs the carb cleaned also. It’s in pretty good shape, should clean up nice. The only damage I see is that the hood is cracked around the hinge, which seems to be a common problem on these.

Its never the wrong brand if it makes you happy! Our neighbor had a sears/roper when I was younger and he had great service out of that thing...Change the oil in that onan often and it will last a LONG time.

if some idiot had been whacking the starter with a hammer and it has rare earth magnets instead of a field winding, chances are the field magnets are broken, look for that when you have it apart.

When I see those GT's from the '70s, I'm taken back to a time when lemon yellow patio furniture with umbrellas that have white long fringe on them and the redwood lounges sat on people's patios. The floral print wallpaper hung on the walls and streets were lined with Pintos, Beetles, Vegas, and simple pick-up trucks that looked like trucks with a use. Ahhhh.....the nostalgia can go on and on. Well, I think that Sears made a good lawn tractor in that age and it looks like you found one in very nice shape for a great deal!!! Congratulations on a nice GT and better yet, on having a nice friend of the family who Took Care of Business When You're Away!!! Get that man a nice meal.

They do seem well built. Not sure if I’m going to keep this one or fix it up and sell it. That was the original plan, but the more I look at it, the more I like it.

but we used it and it is holding up well...

I have been working on this over the past few weeks, finally got it running. The starter works fine, all I had to do is oil the gear so it spins freely. The starter solenoid was bad. Replaced that, then no spark, which was a loose wire to the points. I also replaced the vacuum hose to the fuel pump since it was loose. It runs and drives good, I think the governor needs an adjustment though.

I have one of those umbrellas and a hardwood BBQ table that we use , I thought they were still COOL
The umbrella is white and yellow segments with the white fringe
