Stock Clutch Spring Compression Length
Just a quick question, I'm rebuilding the driveline on my Cub Cadet 1000 with some non-stock parts but still using a stock spring. I'll be using a shaft collar instead of the coiled pin to set the clutch spring compression and I need to know the approximate compressed length for the stock spring. Uncompressed my spring is ~ 6 5/8". I would assume the clutch and length is the same for any of the quietline tractors.
Like an idiot I didn't measure the old setup before I took it all apart so if anybody has a clutch that is stock or close to it and knows the measurement, I would appreciate it. Thanks! |

There is a hole for the roll pin that keeps the spring in place under tension, that is where the collar should be.

My new driveshaft does not have a hole for the roll pin.

Ok, found all the old parts and mocked them up on the old drive shaft and it looks like the compressed length is about 5 inches on the nose.
If someone has a stock clutch and doesn't mind measuring their spring length to confirm that would be great. |

Just measure where the roll pin is from the end of the shaft that you have and that will set the length of the spring on your new one.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
