1250 PTO adjustment
Hey all. I'm having some trouble with the electric PTO on my machine. This has been going on since I bought it a few years ago. The pto engages without issue but disengaging is a different story. For example, if I am running my snow blower and flip the PTO switch to the off position the snow blower will still spin most of the time but a bit slower. If I drive into a packed pile of snow with the PTO disengaged it will then usually stop but make a slight rubbing sound. When I start the tractor the blower will spin slowly and I can hear the pto rubbing a bit. I am trying to make the adjustments but it is not working. When I loosen the brake flange the distance between the driving hub and the driven disc does not increase. It seems like it is stuck. I have never taken one apart before so I've never seen the internal workings of it to know exactly what is sticking and how to fix it. Can I spray a penetrating oil in there to loosen it up? Winter is coming and I can't procrastinate this any longer. I would like for it to work as it should this winter. Btw I have already read the info in the technical library and followed the directions. Maybe I'm not understanding it correctly or maybe this darn thing is just stuck, idk.

Looking at this again and I don't think I remember seeing this "piece?" circled in red in front of the brake flange...

Take it apart and thoroughly clean it.
Looks like you may want to replace the front crank seal while you are in there. Clean the mating surfaces of the clutch proper, that parts that grab when energized. Everything looks pretty rusty in that area and it needs to be clean. |

Make sure the PTO bearing spins freely.

Do I need a puller to get it apart or will everything slide off? I apologize, I have never done this before

May take some penetrating oil soaking for a bit and some taping with a dead blow or a hammer and a block of wood.
Make sure you note how it comes apart and be sure to reassemble in the reverse order. I've never had to resort to a puller but maybe I was lucky? |

When power is sent to the pto what actually happens? Does the whole front section including the pulley slide in?

The coil of magnetic wire when 12v is applied via your switch it pulls the drive hub back and spins the pulley at engine speed. If you don’t have sparks flying off the clutch while running I’d say you have a PTO bearing failing. Seen it several times.

Finally got this fixed. I couldn't figure out why there was no gap when the brake wasn't even pressing down. I found that there were two different PTO clutches used on these. I have the black Warner PTO. With mine the pulley needs a shim/shims behind it, the other PTO does not have these. Part # IH-117415-C1. Two shims later, and I'm within spec. BTW, these are discontinued and were not cheap.
