It’s not a metal on metal chirp. It’s more like a bird call chirp. I checked, and there are no birds in it.

I got the other seal done and topped off the oil. It looked pretty clean on the stick but was low so I didn’t fully change it yet. No leaks from the engine now and no leaks from the hydro area. I took it for a ride around the yard and it rides nice. Hydro is responsive. Now, to the chirp. It’s definitely not coming from the head gasket area. It’s coming up around the carburetor. So while it was running I took the air filter cover off and blocked the carb intake with a rag. No change in sound other than almost stalling. I put my finger over the breather vent tube and the sound changes. So it seems like it’s from the crank case breather. So, I will take that apart and investigate it.

Update: it’s definitely the reed valve in the breather. I took the cover off and started it briefly and it did it. I held the reed open and it stopped the noise. I guess a new breather valve is in order.

You are lucky it was the breather. I picked up a KT that sat who knows how long. I got it running, sounds good nice and smooth. Ok, change the oil. Running nice and smooth, i rap the throttle hard a couple times. It starts ticking, i walk away, ticking gets louder and louder and goes kaboom before i could get back to shut it off. Mike

Make sure you have the orange neoprene spacer under the cover ( the one that
goes on the threaded stud, between the top cover and the plate the flapper or reed valve mounts on)
(it keeps the oil in the crankcase and out of the aircleaner)
----Many are missing.

Mike, that sucks... I hope that doesn't happen to me. This engine replaced a grenaded one, I don't want another grenade job. Obviously its hard to describe sounds in typed text, I thought it was a ticking sound at first, when the engine is at full throttle it kind of sounds like a ticking sound, but at slow RPM's it's definitely a chirping sound. The orange neoprene seal is in there. What I don't understand is just why it's making this noise. it's a reed valve, and it stays shut when the engine is off. It's not a blowby issue, because I took the plugs out and turned it over and it still does it with no compression. The only time it doesn't make the sound is if I hold the reed open. It's intact and doesn't look bad to my eye. Maybe it's not making a good enough seal and the air blowing past the reed is making it like a duck call. I have the umbrella style from the other engine, I was thinking about installing that to see what it does. I know it should be replaced with new, but I don't want to drop about $60 for all the parts if it's not actually the cause of it.

I decided to just replace the breather assembly and hope for the best.
Meanwhile, while waiting for that to come (tomorrow) I installed the rear sleeve hitch. I had the sleeve hitch from my 123 and needed a lift part so I got one from rmowl over the weekend. I ordered some very nice new Frankenstein bolts for it. Looks good to me, I may paint it though.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
