1572 Steering Arm
Well it finally gave up the ghost. The steering arm on my 1572 is getting a lot of play on it (over 1/4" slop when measured at the end of the arm by the bolt for the power steering cylinder) when moving it back and forth. I know I shouldn't complain as both the spline on the top of the LH steering knuckle and the spline in the steering arm stripped/wore out back about 1991 or 1992. At the time, rather than throw them out and buy new parts, I just figured I would try to extend the life on what was left. I took the steering arm and drilled it to accept the same roll-pin used on the drive shaft, then while clamping everything in place drilled the steering knuckle and drove in the roll-pin. Now some 27 or 28 years later, I think it did its job.
I have a steering knuckle and a steering arm I obtained from the sponsors, used of course. Question I have, what is the BEST way to assemble these parts so they will not strip out like the originals did? Should I put a small amount of say Loktite 648 retaining compound on the splines? Got any ideas for best results? What is the torque spec for the bolt on the steering arm that forms the clamp and for the bolt on the steering knuckle that holds the clamp down? Thanks

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester.
