I bought an Original!
So here's my latest find. 1961 Cub Cadet Original. Engine is fully rebuilt, runs and drives good. Was used on a farm, so has some of those "farmer mods" that tend to happen. Throttle is mounted on the side of the dash rather than under, and it has a turning knob for ignition rather than a key switch. Has been left mostly original, nothing repainted. I do plan to find an IH logo for the grille eventually. Paid $500 for it, probably a bit steep, but for a rebuilt and early O, plus the fact that I've wanted an O for like 3 years now, it was worth it.

Serial # 23130, near the end of 1961 that's for sure. 22,629th one built if I can do math correctly, and 545 away from the end of 1961 production.

I got a deck with it, certainly not in the best of shape though. Need to work on that. The tires and muffler really are quite something, aren't they?

Yep, it has the tank off of a K241 on it. Coulda gotten an original rounded one, but didn't have the mounting straps for it. Nevertheless, it'll certainly go pretty darn fast!

Yup, big tires help. If you get the deck working right, and have sharp blades, the Orig cuts real sweet. Once the deck is aligned and the blades timed well, you would like cutting with it. The orig doesn't do towing very well, but the bigger tires might help. Just not a ton of pulling power.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
