Default Paint! TSC Federal Yellow w hardener?

Restoring a 100.

Ok I keep driving in circles. No idea on primer no idea on paint. I was told to use epoxy primer as it has wayyy better adhesion to bare metal than anything else. But its expensive ($40 per quart)

TSC has Majic "case power yellow" is this pretty close to original? It says can add the Majic hardener.

https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/pr...-quart-1342787

Also what white for the wheels?

And my most important question, where can I source epoxy primer affordably if anyplace?

all advice appreciated!! Time to get this pile of parts (some sandblasted) moving forward!

Thanks!

I would steer clear of the Majic paint. I used it on my 129 and it takes a looong time to cure, even with their hardener. I could leave marks in the paint with my thumbnail a week after spraying it.

On my 100, I used Vansickle Federal Yellow paint. It’s sold at Orscheln Farm stores. It seems to be much better paint. It cures much faster. A day later, the paint was hard. To be safe, I let it cure for a week before I assembled any pieces.

The white is Vansickle IH off-white.
For primer, I used Vansickle gray primer. They make several tinted primers including yellow which I wish I’d known about earlier. That would have taken less coats of yellow to cover than the gray primer.

adam thank you for that and what a nice tractor!

I am in RI. Not sure if anyone sells vansickle paints online (hope so)

By the way, did u use hardener and if so what kind? I really want to use hardener in whatever I use.

Also, how many quarts did it take of primer and also of the paint?

My paint expert today really pushed epoxy for priming bare metal. He is a high end paint consultant for automotive paints and his options wedre way too expensive for an old garden tractor resto.

Now the wheels and engine are blasted, as well as the tower and frame last winter. I think I can just clean up the rear end and paint that without having it blasted.

Still havent found a primer or paint solution yet...

Majic paint has mixed reviews, rustoleum customer service said not to use hardener or reducer with their products, and vansickle cant ship me their etching primer (but I think they can ship the paint itself but thats like $50 shipping).

still trying to get a paint option thats affordable and decent

My one experience with "Majic" paint told me one thing, I'll never use their products again.

Regarding paint prices, you just have to hold your nose and pay up. Don't get hung up on the fact you can buy a gallon of house paint at Lowe's Depot for $40. You're on the right track as far as wanting to use hardener type paint.

Think of all the monotonous sanding and rust removal you go through getting a surface prepped, and that will help you to not skimp on the final phase of the job.

Here's mid-way through my Sears Suburban resto series where I'm trying to learn how to HVLP. Let's just say mistakes were made, but in the end it came out really nice. May be a tid-bit or two you can use:

Case IH Iron Guard 935 white
About $30/qt
Only way to go.
You sand blasted the engine??
When you paint do not paint it the head or the fins on the engine.

thanks guys. still lacking self etching primer that can use hardener and reducer. (rustoleum cant apparently). as to that case IH paint, I found that the valspar no longer sold by TSC but hopefully can get it mail order.

yes I had my guy blast the engine after we sealed up any openings. It is getting a teardown/overhaul afterwards anyway as well. it had a couple layers of peeling paint, now bare iron. I can paint the cooling fins with HTP or just leave them.

Ok just got back from the automotive paint dealer. He introduced me to a DTM single stage 2-part urethane... Direct To Metal. No primer. Said his industrial customers use it all the time and its tough as nails. Someone used in on a concrete floor, drag stuff over it all day, no complaints.

I got two quarts of a subdued yellow, and an off white for the wheels and hood. Very similar to cub colors but more subdued and antique-looking.

Also got 1 qt paint remover, and a gallon of lacquer thinner for cleanup and thinning.

So, we'll see.

My concern with DTM paint is that it is supposed to be applied to a "properly prepared surface".
I take that as meaning, amongst other things, "rust free".
Now with a 6o plus year old tractor, I don't think you can possibly ever sandblast enough to completely eliminate rust out of every nook and cranny.
I'd be afraid that without some type of primer to encapsulate the remaing rust, it would eventually creep through the DTM.
I'm not saying anything is wrong with using the DTM, but I'd want it over primer.
Another thing, a primer coat would give some filling to a rough surface areas, not so sure DTM alone would do as good.
I'm not suggesting what you should do, just throwing out my

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
