IH 129 won't start ?Back again
Now I am embarrassed, but one last request on this project:
Everything looks like the replacement of the K301 with the K321 engine is a go. The drive shaft and the drive shaft hum are all proper fit, etc. Now the problem: The 2 engine mounting bolts at the rear of the engine were easily accessed and removed. The 2 bolts up front over the front axle can be felt but I can not get the box end wrench into position to remove or loosen them. Does this require some special tool? or do I have to remove the front axle and holding frame to get to them? I need to get the old K301 engine off the frame of the CC129. talk about vexation...almos ready to use bad words...but I restrain my self. Thanks Again |

Jack it up so the axle can fully swing both ways. Use jack stands. Push the axle down to access the bolt.

Duh..I have 4-5 larger tractors and have taken wheels off for repairs and was well aware that the front axle pivoted...but totally blown away by the provided information given above. Brain starts to get narrowed with age.
Thanks..I was able to get the 2 front engine mounting bolts out...but,,,what a job. The space is extremely tight and no socket will fit. thank the Almighty for the ratchet wrenches....Now I am loosing sleep as to how am I to get the bolts restarted when installing the new engine. I have medium size hands but there is no way I can get 2 fingers up, under and twist to start the bolts??? I'm sure I'll manage but i will have to use some of my old surgical instruments such as long hemostats etc. thanks again...chuckle..chuckle |

One of my favorite tools for jobs like that was my children's hands.
However they up and moved out, many many years ago. Now it's things like a bolt, Gorilla taped to the end of screwdriver. High tech solutions ya see. Ken |

Use a drift pin in the back holes to line up the fronts. You should be able to get a thumb and index finger in there.

Thanks Morton and West VG: Will do as suggested.
Last request I hope: What is the torque for the head bolts? I used to have a book with a lot of small engine repairs and showing the sequence as well as the torque but can't find it when needed. for the K 301 or K321). |

Well, In the IH manual it states that K241, K301, and K321 are to be torqued to 420 in. lbs, which should be 35 ft. lbs If I know how to do math. The Kohler K series engine manual says 30 ft lbs. My 107 has 'em at 35, because I was going off the IH manual. no issues with them at all.
