The timing hole should be on the SG side of the fan shroud and may have a snap plug in it, or, it may be on the front side of the bearing plate, same SG side.

Default IH 129 won't start

finsruskw:

Not too sure which side is the SG side/ could you give more detail, please.

I did a very through inspection of the shroud inside and there were no holes on the inside aside for the bolt holes///I will inspect again.

Thanks

Default IH 129 won't start

Gentlemen, again I thank you.
1. there is absolutely no sighting hole in the shroud of the K 321 and would provide photos I took today showing the outsides as well as the inside.

2. What this discussion is bearing down to is it possible to replace my worn K301 with the K321 that I have? I called a local repair shop that I have dealt with over the years and asked what an overhaul of the 301 would cost. Using Kohler parts around 1200 and after market ome about 600. could almost buy a used 301 on a CC129. Question is whether the drive shaft can fit to the shaft to the hydraulic tranny? I will take the worn engine out anyhow but am trying to get some lead information if it is available from someone's experience.

The K321 should fit into the 129. I almost said it wouldn't but realized that the 129 is a wide frame, so there's enough space to fit the larger flywheel in without the frame cutouts that the 147 had. As long as you're okay with having a different engine in it, go for it. As for driveshaft, the 129's original shaft should work with the k321.

Default IH 129 won't start

Sorry, I forgot the pictures.
Is there a reason I might not be comfortable going up to the K321 (14 HP) vs K301 (12 HP). could this give some difficulty with the hydrostat tranny?

Trying to cover all the bases I can before rushing into something stupid. I can always put the 321 in and see how it performs. I only use this tract to run the rototiller and that is only used for surface cultivation of white root weeds. If I does not work out, I guess I'll either have the overhaul or get another 129 for about 400. Make sense??/

Looking closely at the drive shaft connections, they look about the same looking at the bolt holes which measure the same distance apart.
Thanks Again for the Patience.

Yep, they should bolt right up no problem, the K241, 301, and 321 are pretty universal between the narrow and wide frames (other than the K321 needing those pesky frame cutouts in the narrow frames). You may want to replace that driveshaft hub though, there's quite a notch worn into it from the driveshaft pin.

I'm wondering which K321 you have? Perhaps you might be able to glean some useful info from the videos:

https://www.google.com/search?q=timi...LgJ9O80s,st:40

And as mentioned before... Your driveshaft pin appears missing.

Did you look at the front side of the bearing plate for the sight hole?

Do the work yourself, an OH should cost about $200 for machine shop work and $150 for parts.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
