The 124, 127, and 129 should all have a K301a 12hp engine, unless the stock engine has been replaced. I believe the K241, K301, and K321 all have the same size head gasket, at least mine appear to, but am not entirely certain.

Take your gasket with you. Call first as he is going out of business but still there most days. I talked to him in June or July, he is an old fart like me so we get along, He might help you out, even might have a 12 hp head gasket in stock. |

The 10 hp (k241), 12hp (k301) and the 14 hp (k321) all use the same head gasket. Seeing in the picture that you have 9 bolt holes in the gasket tells me you have a K241, K301 or K321.
Like it was said before, all of your three tractors originally came with a K301.

Are you rotating the engine in the correct direction? If you rotate it backwards, the points would close at TDC, not open like they should.

What is the correct rotation of the engine facing it at the drive shaft (front)
Clockwise or counter clock wise? thanks |

When the points open, the plug fires, as you continue to turn it clockwise, it will turn approximately 5/8 turn, then the points will close, and it is on the exhaust stroke. As you continue slowly turning, the points will remain closed as the piston come up and starts back down on the intake stroke and points still remain closed. As the piston reaches bottom and starts back up to the top, points still are closed till the piston reaches approx top dead center then the points open again firing the plug. Looking at the points and seeing them just open is the time to line up the timing mark on the flywheel. Remember it is a 4 stroke engine so while the timing mark will align on each revolution, the points only open every other revolution. Hope this helps and apologies if you already know this. As a side note: looking at your your pix of the head gasket, I really think it is your problem, not the points unless you are not getting spark. |

IH 129 won't start
Thank you for the replies.
1.Am waiting for delivery of the head gasket, etc., which will be installed on the cc 129 with the defective gasket and see if it corrects the starting problem. 2.the second CC129 I have starts but burns a pint of oil with each 1 hr running and blows a lot of smoke. I removed the head and found the head gasket ok but I could see the piston wobbles with just finger pressure when it is at TDC. I would assume that I either need a ring job and or resize the cylinder bore. I am not capable of all this . Can I replace this k301 engine with the spare K321 that I have as a spare. Its cylinder/piston is snug as opposed to the one above. 3. I note that the K321 does not have a S or T mark on the flywheel, but a square metal block. I will provide pictures of same. Also the shroud does not have a hole to do a timing light test for point testing. How is the timing tested?? sorry about all these questions and I do appreciate the assistance. |

That looks like a custom modification on that flyweel, I don't think they came from the factory with a raised patch like that, or at least mine didn't.
As for the smoking engine, if you can wiggle the piston around at TDC by hand, that engine needs to be rebored, with new rings. You can either oversize it and put in an oversize piston, or install a sleeve and use a factory size piston. If you don't rebuild it, it will still run, but you would NEED to constantly monitor oil level to prevent failure. As for the timing hole, not sure why it doesn't have one. All mine do.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
