Default 2518 cast iron trans question

I recently read on one of the threads where someone used Rotella T oil in a Cub Cadet hydro transmission but didn’t want to highjack that thread so I decided to start a new one . I recently acquired a 2518 with the cast iron transmission and would like to replace the oil and filter. Is the Rotella T a good oil to use in this trans? If so would it be the regular Rotella T 15W-40 or something different? Thanks,

Here is what Cub Cadet recommends...

"Cub Cadet Drive System Fluid Plus
NOTE: Cub Cadet Drive System Fluid Plus is specially formulated for this application. If any other oil is used Cub Cadet will not be responsible for substandard performance. Failures due to use of improper fluid are not covered by warranty. For maximum protection, use Cub Cadet Drive System Fluid Plus
."

That would be 737-3120.

However, it is your tractor, it is beyond the warranty period, it is your time, and your money. You can install whatever you want.

I appreciate your reply and you are absolutely correct. But it’s always nice to have a readily available alternative so I was just wondering if the Rotella T was a suitable substitute for the C. C. drive system fluid. I was curious if those in the know on this site were using the Rotella T without any problems. Thanks,

If you are going to use motor oil instead of a hydraulic/ transmission oil (tractor hydraulic/ trans oil) then I would suggest 30wt. The older IH equipment stated if you didn't use IH hy-tran, you could run a 30wt motor oil.

Me personally, I don't use IH Hy-Tran (same thing as the CCC recommend fluid), but I do use a tractor hydraulic/trans oil. You can buy it almost anywhere oil is sold.

And to add to what Jon said,
I find the "303" hyd fluid, is too thick if you are operating in colder temps (*32 and lower)

I run standard Rotella 15w-40 in most of my machines now with no issues.

If you look in the Hydro-Gear manual (the maker of your hydrostatic transmission) it says to use motor oil. Here is what motor oil it recommends.

15* to 100* 20w-50
-5* to 100* 10w-40
-35* to 100* 15w-50 synthetic

Do not use Hytran.

I have run the cheap $30 a bucket tractor transmission stuff from TSC with no issues also. I'll probably start switching over to the TSC stuff because Rotella is getting to cost around $15-$18/gallon. I'm getting cheap in my old age.

Thanks to everyone for their input. It is nice to know about a locally available substitute in such cases. I didn’t want to take a chance on damaging my transmissions by not using the recommended CC oil so the information concerning the Rotella T is much appreciated. Thanks,

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
