Default Kohler M18 valve seats

Hello all,

I'm working on a Kohler Magnum 18hp out of an 1810. I bought this cub as a flip, but soon found out I got shafted. The cub apparently had been left outside and the gas tank all the way to both cylinders were full of water. There was enough corrosion in the engine to pit the intake valve seat.

My question is this, does the intake valve side have a valve seat insert? The parts break down calls for 4 seats, but the jug sure doesn't look like its got one on the intake side. The exhaust side is pretty and shiny and I can tell it's an insert.

Is it possible to grind this seat with the proper angled stone using a drill press? Has anyone done this?

Looking at the photo, the intake valve is on the right.

Thanks so much for the help!

A valve seat cutting tool may help. A kit such as this is handy...but pricey.

An engine machine shop may be able to clean up that ugly seat.

Take it to a machine shop and have the seats ground. Put it back together, sell it and be happy. DO NOT use a drill press as a valve grinder, or you will have to put a set in it.

After you have the seats ground, they should also grind the valves.
Then the valve clearance needs to be set by grinding the valve stems.
(after the cylinders are bolted to the block)
Also you need intake valve stem seals.
Guaranteed yours are hard and/or broken.

Here's some info on valve seals and head gaskets to save you some money.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
