Default Steering Wheel, what will fit?

I am redoing a 149 and was considering changing out the steering wheel with one off a newer cub. However, I have no idea what steering wheels would fit, I am guessing I could go with anything up through the 82 series. I know the 82 series differs from mine in appearance and I like the looks of those better than what my original looks like. I kind of like the looks of the ones off the newer style 1000-3000 series lawn tractors, could someone tell what wheels would actually bolt on without any modifications! Thanks, appreciate the input, pics would be nice too. I know that the tractors in the series following mine (ie: 1200, 1250, 1450, etc) use the same wheel, wanting something different, there is nothing wrong with the one I have, just looking for options.

My 78 1450 has the same wheel as the red X82 tractors so you can definitely run that style wheel. I thought someone had installed it but the guys here set me straight, it came that way from the factory and has a nice looking IH logo on the center cover.

Thanks for the pic, I figured that wheel would work, but did not know a 1450 came with that one, thought they were the same as a 149.

Ql series could have had either style steering wheel. This is the wheel off of my 1250.

The earlier QL's had the same steering wheel, as the 1X9's. The later QL's used the same steering wheel, as the 82 series.

I'm going to take this thread one step farther with another question. Has anyone here found a match for the diameter and spline count on our cubs to a car steering column? I've seen garden tractors with automotive steering wheels for a custom look and thought that might be kinda cool. Grant makes adaptors for just about any car made and it might be kinda cool to put a grant wheel on a cub. Especially something like my super that has power steering.

CC1450, I've got an identical wooden suicide knob to that one on my 1872.

Yeah I just took that one off because it's wood was splitting apart. It looked like it was a nice part in it's day. I kind of regret removing it now, whoever installed it had cranked it down so tight it marred the otherwise mint wheel. Oh well.

Thumbs up

I wonder what year exactly they switched wheels?...

My '74 1250 has the 1x8, 1x9 wheel..... and the '78 1650 has the 82 series one.

Does anyone know if anything other than one from a late model 1000 series or the 82 series will fit? I was thinking about ordering a 82 series wheel, they look nice and still have the IH logo on them....but was looking at what others may fit, I was looking for more options, if there are any more options. Thanks for the replies and pics!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
