Carb, timing, rebuild?....not sure what.
Alright. The ol' k341 in the 1650 is running rough. At full throttle its running rough and im seein a significant amount (to me anyway) of blue/white smoke. Its got a new ignition system ( switch, condenser, coil, plug, plug wire, points). I adjusted the timing by using the mark on the flywheel. Yes i know this isnt the prefered way but it was all i could do at the time without a timing light. She idles great but as soon as I idle it up it spits sputters and runs rough. Ive tried adjusting the carb but no luck. Im somewhat familiar with the engine but not near as much as some of you guys on the forum!! Some help would be appreciated!! Thanks fellas

Set your timing using Matt G's static timing guide. Not to sure if that will help your smoking or not but until the engine is timed correctly it's hard to say. http://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/s...ead.php?t=4405 I had a K241 that would stumble when it would throttle up. It was a blown head gasket. Head gaskets are like $11 and it would be a good time to remove the carbon build up at the same time. The service manual has the info in it. Have you set the carb to the factory defualts? Has the carb been rebuilt lately? If your 1650 has been sitting a while it might need to be rebuilt. Could be some play around the throttle shaft. |

Just re-viewed the post on Matt's site for setting points & tips.
Can't be any simpler than what is shown. If I can understand it, that means it's easy. Nik, |

I ran into a similar issue on my 1650 when I was doing the Timing and tuning. Check your spark plug gap. The manual says 0.035 but when I put in a new spark plug with it gapped at 0.035 the engine ran great at low idle but would run rough on high speed. I put the old spark plug gapped at 0.020 back in and the engine ran and continues to run smooth and high and low speed.
I also found this in the Kohler Service Manual under the the Governor Sensitivity Adjustments recommended on 6.32 of the Kohler Service manual, where it recommends 2 things to do if the engine is seeking. One, setting the Spark Plug gap to 0.020 and the other of moving the governor spring one hole lower. Hope this helps. Cleon |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
