g.

If the governor gear shaft is pinned as per the service bulletin the gears don't fall off.

It is worth whatever you are willing to give for it. I would want to hear and see it run before I put $300 out for it, if he claims it to be a runner, otherwise, my personal limit would be $200. I would look at it carefully, to see if all of the parts are there. If not, then how many are missing and what would it cost to replace them. For example, the side panels are roughly $40 to $60 to replace them. Also, look at the front nose for cracks where it is bolted to the frame or cracks in the hood/hood hinge. I see those too often on the 82 series tractors. This isn't your first tractor, so look at the normal things that you look at, knowing that some wear and tear on the machine is to be expected, like slop in the steering, etc. Good luck on getting the tractor.

And FWIW:
When you pin the plug holding the gear shaft into the block,
make sure you leave enough length to pull the roll pin out, if the need arises.
OR drill the hole deep enough so the pin can be driven into the
shaft plug, to allow it to clear the block so it can be removed.

You don't hear about the thousands that run ok, just the ones that don't.
The series one's had oiling problems as stated.
And for sure, not worth fixing.
Cam gear is metal. Oil pump gear is plastic. Governor gear is plastic.

I haven't heard much about the KTs dropping gears, but I'm sure they did if the mags did. Same castings.

I wouldn't be worried about whatever is in it if it runs. If the series 1 survived this long, it's probably ok. If it's a series II, it's more than likely a replacement engine. Of the half dozen 782s and 682s I've bought/sold, only one has had the original series 1 in it (and it ran great). All of them would have had a series 1 from the factory.

Others have covered the major 82 series bases. They are great tractors, and parts are readily available. They made a ton of this style (it's the same tractor, more or less, as a 1711/12, 1811/12 as well).

In the shape that's in, I'd buy it as a parts tractor. There is a LOT of work there.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
