Default How common - sheared roll pin on snow blade lift

I haven't really sorted it out yet but I think maybe I sheared the roll pin in the little arm on the side of the frame of the 1872 where the blade lift tube connects. I was cold and not happy when the blade wouldn't lift. The 3 point moves up and down fine. I backed the tractor back to the garage angled to the max so I wouldn't drag any more snow than necessary. Cleared the snow and parked it in the garage. I'm warming up trying to figure my next move and posting this for any help I might get. TIA

Common problem if you didn't have the shaft support installed. It's #43 circled in red in this pic.

This is what it looks like and although this is listed as being for the Cyclops it is the same for the older Supers. The later Cyclops have a different design rock shaft and don't use this.

I figured out where the problem is. I was looking at the roll pins in the rock shaft as the problem - I was wrong. The 3/4" shaft that comes out the end of the RS and provides a depth stop on the mower lift and is also the arm that connects to the plow lift tube has broken welds. The shaft turns but it doesn't cause the business end to rotate. I will weld it up and I should be back to plowing snow in an hour - I hope.

Thanks for your replies Sam but I don't understand where that bracket (in red) would go. I took a couple of photos but I won't take time now to post them. Thanks, Steve

This is a home made support but you can see how it connects the inner rockshaft to the outer part.

Sam the last photo makes it clear where it goes, thank you. I actually considered connecting the two on a temporary basis to limp back to the garage.

Turns out the shaft is probably closer to 1" dia. and hardened steel. Anyway my weld didn't hold - I did do a fair amount of plowing before it let loose. Today it was off with the seat/fender pan and some serious grinding & welding, time will tell if I have it fixed for good. I didn't get the registration correct so it doesn't lift the blade as high as before plus it doesn't steer well with the front tires in the air. When it warms up abit I will modify the lift tube to gain an inch so it will be as before. I'll fabricate a strap like shown above, complete with the little gussets, cute.

Sam, what usually fails the weld or the 2 sheer pins?

I did do some plowing to test and will go back out to clean up paths for the dogs after I warm up.

The 2 pins normally fail and then you get to do the job from hell trying to get the rock shaft out.

The same thing happened to my 1872 back in 2011. The big haban 54" blade and 45" snowblowers are heavy. That's when i learned about that cross shaft support bracket. A must have for those attachments.

Good luck - Tim

You are correct, Sam I still haven't replaced the rockshaft on that 1872, and as the OP discovered, welding the end on won't last long. whether you shear the roll pins or break the end off you're outa luck unless you get that rockshaft pulled out or back in correct position.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
