It's a 73!
I found this little gem on EBAY a while back. It was located relatively close and now it resides in the Cub house. I found a NOS K161 shortblock for it. The shortblock is going into my restored "72" and the rebuilt K181 will go into this unit. This "73" was built in April 1971.

Very good find! And the engine looks at first glance to be in good shape, too!

Someone started to add components to the block such as the cylinder head and some sheet metal parts. The paint job is half assed but will be re done.

Looks like you did really well to find a 73 in nice shape and exceptionally well on the NOS engine!!! Sometimes, if I rescue a cub that has set outside for a while, I am grateful for a bad paint job if it stopped it from rusting away! Your 72 will sparkle when it sports a new engine. Can't wait to see the pics!!!

Here is the "72". It is mostly complete but does not have the hood decals installed yet. The pic is from 2018.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
