I think the answer is a pair of new auto relief valves that both failed at about the same time. Less than a year old.

Well that's unfortunate, and confusing!

Not entirely sure what would ever cause a set of almost new relief valves to fail so quickly.

Yes, concerning. I bought 4 "new" auto relief valves from MachTechDirect.

I tested them again today. I have a working hydro attached to a rear end on a wood cradle. The two relief valves in it were working. I ran the hydro with a drill and verified axles rotated as expected when the trunnion arm is moved.

I replaced one valve with one of the suspected failures (reverse side). Reverse no longer worked. Swapped the two valves. Forward no longer worked. Installed the second suspect valve. Neither direction worked. Replaced original valves, both directions worked.

So both auto relief valves are faulty.

Go figure.

go figger?----
Me figures maybe you are not getting "the real picture" with the slow rpms of a drill motor.
Try them in an actual Gt operating under normal circumstances.
Just trying to think out of the box.

All the other valves work with a drill driving them...

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
