Default Cub 2084 Rebuild & Upgrade

After buying my previous Cub SGT and seeing how good of a tractor it is, I found this 2084 w/ a 60" Haban deck for $450 and jumped on the deal immediately. It ran great, but the grille, side panels, and hood were busted up and not on the tractor and there was a leak in the rear end. Some of them were repairable though. Last Summer, after I got it, I did the basic maintenance on it......replaced the hydrostatic drive fluid, new axle seals, rear cover gasket, filter, etc, greased the spindles, sharpened the blades, etc. It ran and mowed great, until I saw a trail of fluid dripping from the rear end. Apparently the axle seals and rear cover gasket didn't solve the problem with it leaking. It sat in the garage until now.

Someone had put a lot of work into this tractor before me, I'm not sure if it was a dealer or a previous owner. I think the hydrostatic drive pump unit was rebuilt because there was evidence of it being apart and it seemed very, very responsive, almost like a new unit. I think the problem with it leaking was because they didn't replace the infamous CORK GASKET. I'll find out for sure soon since I just pulled the rear end out of the tractor.

Next, the Kohler CH22 engine (which isn't the correct engine I've found out), has been pulled and I have a brand new CH23 that I've since set up to replace the CH22. I've cleaned and repacked the CV joints for the driveshaft with new grease, and I've also got a new seat for it as well. So the next move is to pull the pump for the transaxle and replace the cork gasket and bolt in the new engine. I'll have more pictures to come this week as I make more progress.

Thank you, Sam. I stumbled upon that thread when I was Google searching Cyclops info and once I discovered the wealth of information of this great site, I joined. That's VERY useful info for any SGT Cyclops owner.

If this is the case, it makes me think it was not a dealer who serviced it.

That's a good point. They probably would have sprung for the new cork gasket. Stan was nice enough to give me a new cork gasket when I bought his Kubota WG600 for my 2182 while I was there.

The old engine ran great, but I had a brand new CH23 Kohler sitting in my garage so I figured I'd do a little upgrade and get a little more power to turn the 60" Haban deck.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
