Default Just a tip...

Before you run the 149 much, raise the hood, and get an allen wrench that will fit the s/generator pulley on the crankshaft. It take a long allen wrench, but you can reach through a couple holes there and tighten the heck out of it. Miine rattled after I had overhauled it, worked itself loose. I took all the PTO clutch and the s/g pulley off and put in a new key and new allens. Tightened it all back up and intend to keep an eye on it. Its a lot easier to do that than to take the freakin pto clutch and all that off again.
Just my .02 cents worth. You'll have the ole girl running good and working in no time.

Another great thread, Sam. I love my 149 and would have a hard time trading it away for anything. Soo stout and easy to work on. I also had the front pulley spin off after rebuilding, twice now even with Loctite and cranking it down as much as I could stand. Once you do one PTO clutch, it's like riding a bicycle for any future endeavors. You have an earlier 1x8/9 series like mine with the serial # still on the rear end and the non safety-stop, non-interlocked PTO. Mine is #401xxx...

I will try to post some pics maybe tomorrow. Maybe I should just start a new thread.

That is how mine was fixed. I refered to that in an earlier post. The difference is that yours looks like a much better fix than mine.

Sam, I don't mean to splash any cold water on your drive shaft idea, because it looks as if it is a good one. I am just wondering if that shaft needs to be balanced because of the probability of getting something a little off center in the fabrication/welding process? It seems to me that if anything is off at all on that, the drive shaft would vibrate horribly.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
