Got a call from the machine shop today that he made a boo-boo and bored it .020 over what it was supposed to be; it was to be .020 over from stock but ended up being .040 over. He’s looking at doing a sleeve now (pro bono since he messed up). I’m not sure if I should go back to standard bore instead of .020 over now. I have a brand new .020 over piston & ring kit (OEM Kohler) that I would like to use but I’m thinking perhaps I should source a STD piston/ring set if we’re going to go to the trouble of sleeving the block.
What say the hive mind?

I supposed if you had the NOS Kohler piston/rod parts, I'd just have it sleeved to match them. Measure twice, bore once, eh? :-)

I found another NOS piston/ring set on fleabay for $60 so I ordered those. If, when they get here, they’re obviously not NOS then I’ll send them back and just use the .020 over set I already have. But if they look good I’ll use those. Might as well try to get the most out of the block and sleeve if it’s going that direction, I figure. I doubt I’ll ever wear it out, even at .020 over, but it just seems prudent to make the most of the lemons I’ve been given

Yes sir, sleeved back to STD.
All told, the engine now has NOS valves, NOS piston & rings, NOS rod, NOS crankshaft, new SKF bearings, NOS head gasket, NOS plug wire, new points & condenser, new plug (of course), a rebuilt Carter 26 carburetor to replace the crummy leaky Chinese one that the tractor came with, and then the boring stuff like gaskets, seals, air filter, and things like that (all new obviously). Had the gas tank cleaned, a small crack brazed, and pressure tested by a local radiator shop. New muffler. Fixed the ruined threads on the exhaust elbow by cutting them off and welding on the threaded portion of a 1" pipe nipple (as finsruskw suggested on here in the past). Lots and lots of painting... Oh, and the S/G issues I had a year ago now have been fixed as well - after soldering a new post onto the field wire (if I remember correctly) it charges correctly. There were a number of odd/frustrating issues I ran into along the way, but such is tinkering on old machines. I've got them all figured out...I think ![]()
