It was called a maintenance minder to help remind the owner when to change the oil, fluids, lube, air cleaner, etc. (maintenance items). The owners manual recommended changing certain fluids after XX amount of hours and this item helped keep track of hours of use. Bad thing is if you or your little one left the key on, the meter keeps turning thus making it hard to know actual hours. Kinda synonymous with an hour meter. The later models came out with hour meters that actually had the numbers on them.
Ryan, Here's a couple pics of the muffler on my 169. The noise suppression mufflers Lew was talking about look similar, but have a longer exhaust exit and smaller inlets and outlets IIRC. The pics also give a good shot of the heat shield for a 169. I would think that someday, someone would start remanning the 169 mufflers. Those along with the 800 and 86 are hard to find.

Congrats on #2.
The guy that bought my 125 out in Ct has 3 169s! Two with manual and one with hydro lift. They are all projects.

Well, it happened....#3 169 has arrived. It was on an auction down in Des Moines. It is pretty rough, but believe it or not, it runs excellent. It has a replacement 16hp engine (12 fin) it has BOTH hydro lift and manual lift...lights. it unfortunately has no hour meter or correct air cleaner, but the serial number is correct, with 0048 as the machine code and its within 250 serial #'s of #2 169. It also came with a 36 inch blower for an Original, a 50 inch deck thats in excellent shape, and a homemade blade.

Ryan,
Congrats on number...........three?? Dang, you went from lookin' for one, to finding three!! I see number three has the correct heat shield. Looks like a lot of PO mods, but a great basis for an eventual resto. Now you need to find yourself an 800 and trade one of those 169's for it.

Josh,
I know, its crazy. I wasnt going to look into this one but I had some outside influence on it. It does have some correct parts on it, but its a long way from being nice IMO. Did you see the creative hydro lift? Its a step in the right direction I guess...did you see that the generator says "DEWITT" on it?? Mighta been in your neck of the woods at some point.

Nope,
Didn't notice the DeWitt on the gen. Kinda funny. If you're ever out my way, I'd better make sure to lock up the cubs. Don't want my 169 to end up with your growing family.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
