Default tiller time!

This is not for the weak of heart
I got the case apart. If you ever have to take one of these apart, think twice! I am still only about 1/4 into the dissassembly of the case and bearings.
I am sure these went together great at the factory. Everything was new and clean and not frozen with rust.
So I have three bearings still stuck on shafts. One on the second shaft and both on the bottom shaft.
The two large bottom bearings will have to be replaced. Some of the ball bearings were missing in the side with the arrow. I had to cut through the outer race, then remove the balls and then that allowed the case to come apart.
The inner race is well rusted to the shaft. Haven't worked on the other side yet. Looks like both may require heat and a press?
Very heavy chain (bigger than #40) that looks to be in fair shape and may be able to be reused?
Drive gears appear at first glance to be reusable and don't seem to have much wear. (Will need to look at them closer when clean). And I think all of the upper drive line bearings will be OK.
The lube looks as much like a grease than a heavy oil? I need a parts washer for these (YUK!) before having them ready for the E-tank.
Fired up the electrolysis tank after removing about 30% of the ice from it. Interesting to see how much the sacrificial anode are eroded away.
Hope things are good out there in Cub land.
Regards,
Chris

I did get to work on the tiller a little. Got the inside of the cases cleaned of all the 40 year old road tar type grease and gunk.
These covers will be ready for the rust tank in the next few days. Few other parts cleaned and painted. kind of took it easy this weekend.
Hope things are good out there.
Regards,
Chris

Chris, sometimes you need a hand and sometimes you need to take a break for your projects.

Default gasket material?

Anyone have any great ideas on gaskets or gasket material for the case.
I checked with the local dealer and they cant get the big gasket.
Looks to be some type of fairly thick material like maybe .06-.08 inched thick?
I may be able to get a sheet of something (gasket material) and make one too? I may have to check McMaster Carr.
I think there are several other smaller gaskets around the dust cover areas? More research.
Also need to get a idea of the lube. Would a wheel bearing grease work to coat all the sprockets and chains during assembly?
Regards,
Chris

Chris, you should be able to make your own gaskets using the black gasket material. I think someone posted what to use for that housing last year. I'll see if I can't find it and I'll check the manual as well. The bearing grease should work fine for the sprockets and chains for you.

Chris, looks like someone had a bad case of the &#%^@ in that case! You've got your work cut out for yourself, but you'll have it looking as good as new in no time.

Default case c**P

Todd,
I was smiling when I read your post. Yes that stuff had to be removed with a razor blade, plus paint thinner and mineral spirits scrubbing. One half is in the rust tank now and will see what it looks like tonight. May be able to save it yet?
Still need to find a good used 90 degree gear box for the back of the tractor and the bracket too. Yea More dollars! May need a new mule drive just set up for this with the solid pulleys too.

Regards,
Chris

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
