Yes, it will reduce the heat transfer capabilities of the hydro. It's best to leave the aluminum hydro pump, oil pan, head, etc unpainted for this reason.

Your paint is pretty fresh; lacquer thinner will take that right off.

Paint on the Hydro:
In hind site I would agree that Matt is correct. I was not thinking about heat I was thinking clean and paint. So if it wasnt moving it got painted
Since I have the frame back on the rear end I may run this with the paint on. It was a real pain getting it back to gether. Not sure I will take it back apart right now I feel this paint may be a minor heat problem compared to the ammount of dirt that these get on them. It may loose heat better now than if I had not cleaned it up, (my opinion)
(FYI I just took the seat pan off the 127 that I have as a parts tractor and there must have been a gallon of mud/ dirt on top of the hydro, very bad!)
Also I have seen some small ammount of yellow paint on the original ones, may just have be over spray from the factory.
If it blows due to the paint, you guys will be the first to know
Matt, Thanks for all the help and suggestions! I do appreciate them a lot! Even If I am a stubborn old man!
Regards,
Chris

Default 147R update

How come you guys get so much done on these? I just keep finding more parts to weld clean patch and or paint!
I striped the side stickers off the 127 dash plastic. repaired a worn spot in the side of this piece from the mower handle. Cleaned sanded and primed.
Sanded and filled some spots on the 127 tower after it was blasted. primed it and shot it with the upside down spray can of IH red. Also painted the bracket for the mower activation handle. Painted the metal part that is directly behind the battery.
Sanded and ground some cast flash from areas of the front grill casting. It ready for paint maybe tomorrow.
Last night I pulled apart the rest of the engine and ground the broken area in the skirt. Now to get some outside mics and inside mic's to check the crank and bore dimensions.
I think I may be about 70% into this project. It's starting to grow on me!
Hope everyone is having a good week!
Looked at another tractor last night. More to come on that if the guy accepts my offer. Do I need a new toy? NO!
Regards,
Chris

Painted the dash for the 147R. It looks presentable, in white. Started to attach the tower on the 147R but decided to let it dry for another day. Love watching paint dry. Also mowed lawn (3 acres) with the 127 and the two 21 inch tag mowers tonight. Nice to be mowing 80 inches in one swath!

I am done sand blasting on the 147R. The last two parts (grill and tower) cost $60.00. Nice job but a little pricey!

No word on the new antique "big" toy. Maybe by Sunday!
Regards,
Chris

Default pictures update

Have been busy cleaning and painting parts for the 147!
Some pictures here and will add more in next post.
Some update words:
- Took the grill casting back off forgot to place the pivot cross bar into the grill casting to activate the PTO
- tested and installed the key switch
- tested cleaned and installed the light switch.
- tested the elect lift it did not function! Tore it apart and replaced the large and small bearings and cleaned and greased, re-assembled, primed and painted.
Had to make a new bushing for inside the aluminum pivot / mounting point. Had a piece of brass that I sanded /turned down in my Amish lathe ( drill press. cut to length and drilled out for 1/2 inch bore. Much better and will work for another 50 years.
- picked up good used PTO for my cub yard. (PO had drilled out one of the tapped holes for the set screws). Have that new one dis assembled cleaned and primed.
- cleaned the starter gen and painted black. seems to be a red and black theme going here!
- Cleaned the headlight rings ( Chrome die cast) and painted the inside black.
- installed the hood latches.
- tested both of the switches for the lift. work one has three wires and one has four.
Both of these switches have the knob missing any creative ideas for a look alike knob? I thing these were a thin black plastic Item and must have been rather vulnerable to breakage. I may check McMaster Carr to see if I can find something a little beefier.
Hope to order engine parts today for the K321.
Regards,
Chris

Default MORE 147R PICTURES

Some additional pictures that will bring us about up to date on the 147R project. (Darn Pictures failed to come through I will try in next post.)
In the previous pictures the scallops in the side of the dash plastic were repaired the dash stripped of decals and painted to match the hood.
Anyone know where I cant get a real nice tin for the dash? 127 or 147 would work.
(note dates on the pictures are wrong) all these taken approx sept 2011.

***********
I have had a offer to trade this (when done) +$1500 for a 1953 Ford Jubilee with 3 speed Sherman tranny, that runs good but needs all cosmetics and sheet metal work to look good! What would you do? I am going to have a pile of money in this 147R CUB!
*******
Hope the pictures help someone, or keep others from doing this to a cub.

I should have a little more time to post this week since I will be on vacation.
Hope all is well and good in cub land you guys have helped me tons! On this project I can almost speak CUB now
Regards,
Chris

Awesome pics Chris! Your making great progress. Thanks for the pics! I've been enjoying them!

Make sure your ground wires are touching bare metal. That has to be the #1 problem with restored cubs.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
