John: I receive your comment as a compliment. You helped me understand and remember that only a collapsing (or building) field in the primary will induce a voltage in the secondary --exactly like a transformer on AC current. The points' opening is the trigger event: my thinking was very cloudy on that point.
There is a proverb that goes something like, "Like flint to steel, so one man's mind sharpens another's." Thanks for posting. ![]() Jeremiah |

Timing being 'off' is blamed for a multitude of other issues that are the actual problem........
Carb dirty/partially plugged, or out of adjustment. Valves out of adjustment. Weak coil. Bad/incorrect type spark plug wire. Loose/dirty electrical connections at condenser, coil, etc. 'Other'. A combination of these........ These issues will cause an engine to not run smoothly, not gain RPMs, not idle properly, skip/miss/hiccup, etc

I did manage to finally get a new 44A deck for my 1650 project today.
If you don't recall, I broke mine down and took the big parts to the sandblaster last year, and he had me drop it off in front of his shop. It was stolen from his property, apparently. After a long struggle to get him to find me a replacement deck, I finally found one on CL that the guy delivered to his shop, and he paid for it. I just picked it up this morning, and the good news is that it's in better shape than the one he lost! The housing and belt covers are in very solid shape. So now I still have (I think) two good spindles from the old deck to keep as backups. The bad news is, it's all going into storage tomorrow until I can get a place to get back to work on it again. |

i thought i had a timing issue as well and i spent so much time on getting the timing perfect and figured the carb was fine until a buddy brought his carb over and we bolted it on and she ran like a champ.
I cleaned my carb and rebuilt it and it was just not meant to run well again. the are real precise pieces and if its worn or not put back together correctly you are going to kill yourself trying to fix it. so if you can swap a good known running carb on her and try that you can save yourself some headaches. though those headaches are what really make you learn!! Good luck

Nice progress on the 1650. It's a crying shame that people scrap such wonderful machines. You did the right thing by saving it.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
