I would think that if you have a large wooden bench or even a large chunk of wood tree log any heavy hunk of wood you could just put lag bolts into the mounting holes to hold it in place while it is out of the tractor but that would also require a full wiring harness to ensure proper voltages and such

I have started an engine with just a hot wire to the coil and starter but that was in a car not sure if it would work for a small engine just hooked a hot wire from the battery to the + side of the coil and grounded the battery to the block with the stater wire loose just to touch on the battery enough to start it was only a few sec run to show a prospective buyer that it would start

I just don't think my bench is sturdy enough for that big old K341. I'm just going to mount it back up in the 1450. Whatever my problem is with timing should not require that I pull it out again.

FYI,

You can buy a heilcoil kit from amazon for about $17-18. Then again, now that the patent has expired- you can buy just the tap and a few coils cheap if you order from MSC or McMastercarr. I have purchased a few when MSC ran 40% on all taps=00)
For something small like this, you can install 1 or 2 with a pair of needle nose pliers.
So that would be $5-10 route.

If you get into the machinist supply stuff.. there is an option between 2B and 3B threads. 3 is a tigher tolernace fit.

Just a note - We're currently living 3 hours away from my tractor for the Summer, so unfortunately it doesn't look like I'll get much done until August.

DOH! That makes it a little hard to work on the 1650!

We'll be looking forward to your updates, when you get back to the 1650.

No progress at all - in fact, the project is totally back-burnered for a while.

We're moving 3 hours North to Petoskey, and will be in an apartment for at least a year. This means my tractor projects are going to need to go into a storage unit until I can get a place with room to work on them again.

My wife thought I may as well sell the 1650 and 1450 rather than store them. I threatened to leave her. heh heh - just kidding. I just do not want to quit a project that I have started. When I can get back to them, this thread will come to life again.

I had the same hard start after I rebuilt the 1450. was the timing. I finally used a timing light. Using the test light to set the timing was off. Now I have spit & spudder run on after the key is turned off. I'm getting the chevy points bracket and stock chevy points so I can adjust the gap while the engine is running.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
