Those little springs are for the automatic compression release. They are mentioned in the manual.

So, just for the sake of evaluating the problem - if one were to take them out completely, they wouldn't affect timing at all. The compression release wouldn't work, so the engine would crank harder, but it shouldn't exhibit problems like shooting fire out of the carb while starting...

Because, in the end, I think the only reason one would see backfire shooting out of the carb is because the intake valve is still partially open during firing. And the compression release feature doesn't affect the intake valve at all. It only moves the exhaust valve up a little between cycles...

Might as well double check your valves now just to make sure.

I was just out in the garage buttoning the engine back up again, and the top coil mounting bolt hole is stripped out. The cast iron is coming out in the threads.

I guess I need to drill and re-tap that hole.

So frustrating.

And yeah, I was thinking it's a good time to re-check valves while it's on the bench.

I've never done a heli-coil. Would that be the way to go with this? Where do you even get those things...

How about just tapping for the next size larger bolt!!??

Yeah, I looked at the cost of heli-coils today at the auto parts store. I'd be looking at $35 by the time I bought the tools and the coils.

I'm just going to drill and re-tap the thing. I only have a few taps in my toolbox - hopefully I have the right size. If not, hafta buy that...

My neighbors are normally the ones asking me to borrow tools from. None of them have tools that are worth anything to me, and yet harbor freight is rigt up the road from us...
