I disagree. I can buy a gallon of Case/IH yellow for $70 and that same yellow in automotive paint would be closer to $400.

Which is why I still say IH paint is "cheap".

Tim, I know your a paint/body man. But that 400$ you quoted is a retail number. Show me a gallon of paint, by itself without reducer and hardener that's 400$ besides maybe Dupont. I can get most any color I want including Pearl's, metallics etc for under 200$ a gallon, or under 100$ a gallon for basic colors. Its gets even cheaper if purchased as kit. But I can buy automotive 2k yellow for around 70$ a gallon..

I would have thought you mix your own in your shop, which would make it even cheaper still.

I looked up Chrysler federal yellow which is spot on for Cub yellow and here's are some pics. The price you see on the screen is my cost to mix in PPG single stage, retail price which is what he would pay just walking in off the street would be 15-25% higher. You can also add about $75 for hardener and activator.

Here is PPG yellow basecoat, the price you see is my cost to mix two quarts which would give one sprayable gallon once you add about $60 of reducer. On top of that it would need clear coat which would run between $100 and $300 a gallon depending on the clear choosen.

Well, I should have said except PPG or Dupont lol.. But those 2 paints are always higher than anything else out there. Also base is always more costly than SS. I can goto my local supply with a color chip and match any color I want in Nason single stage. Solid color gallon set with reducer and activator is 150$ There are cheaper paints but I tend to stick to Nason for equipment. I bought 2 cases of MACK Fleet white single stage for 50$ a gallon but I didnt like the quality.

WOW.. The one in this window shows 419$ and you have 2 Qts in the quantity !
Edit.. Just noticed "spray able" gallon
I understand paint can be ridiculously expensive and I have purchased paints that were insanely priced but now a days with wholesalers online there is just no reason to spend that kind of money IMO.

The problem with online wholesalers is the equipment. The mixers and the computer is all supplied by the local PPG supply store and if they found out I was buying toners from other suppliers they could come in and remove the equipment, kinda hard to mix paint with no computer. Generally speaking I'm only mixing a few ounces for most repairs so I never have to mix those large quantities.

Tim, I meant no disrespect. Of course a "body shop" mixing colors, color matching, Etc etc. has to have mixers, and computers to match color. Theres no other way for a body shop to operate really efficiently. But in an equipment or tractor painting environment it just doesn't pay. Besides you and maybe another body shop owner here no one here has the equipment to do what you do. When I need to match color I am forced to go to a local supplier and have them mix my code for me and hope to hell they did it correctly.
