Still waiting on the camshaft shims to arrive from partstree.com. They seem to take a long time to arrive when I order from them.
Meanwhile, drilled, tapped and installed Helicoils in two of the bolt holes on the aluminum oil pan. Pretty easy job. I think I'm going to just use this pan rather than try to find a cast iron one. It lasted 40 years so far, right?

Probably because THEY don't have them and have to get them from another source that says THEY do. I have run into this several times w/different suppliers.

I am STILL waiting on the camshaft shims. But I have a question that the service manual isn't clear on. at least the pictures aren't. Can anybody confirm that these are the timing marks on the camshaft gear and the crankshaft? There are two marks on the crank, one closer to the gear. I assume that's the correct mark to align with the dimple on the camshaft gear?

Yep those are the timing marks. I use a paint pen to mark both gears so they are easy to see.

You are of course correct, but so am I. 1 mil is NOT the same as 1mm.
Think about plastic poly sheeting (e.g., drop cloths, vapor barrier, etc) --they are labeled with thickness in mils, or thousandths of an inch as are so many other things. My blue nitrile disposable gloves for example are 5 mils. Definitely NOT 5mm thick.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
