Try this again:
Some parts in primer and some in first coat of white.
Got tired of working on the tins. Cleaned them up and painted them! Only a couple minor runs and sags
This is going to be a 20-30 footer for sure.
Hey it digs dirt up and spits it out!
May try to get another coat of white on tonight while the shop is reasonably warm.
We are supposed to get snow tonight.
Hope things are good in Cub land.
Great first day of 2012!!!
Regards,
Chris

Default Brief Tiller Update

Folks,
I was able to pull up a exploded parts list on the web and could kind of make out the cover and lower bearing arrangement. So back to the garage with some gentle heat and a few well placed love taps I got the covers off. They are a basic slip fit on the O.D. of the bearing flanges and were rusted in place.
I did get all the bolts out of the entire flange so when I get the bottom bearing apart I can split the case and clean and inspect the gears and chains.
I used blaster and heat on the half torque lock rings holding the large bottom bearings to the shaft. But will need to let those set screws soak for a couple days.
Got the one half moon shaped support brace out of the electrolysis tank. Found another stress crack at one of the holes. Welded that area and primed this piece. The other side will be ready by tomorrow evening. I found that 24 hours is about right for most rusty parts.

Those two tillers that Chris Westfall has on here are looking mighty good right about now! You guys better scoop those!!!

Back to the work thing tomorrow!
Have a great day!
Regards,
Chris

Tiller Parts update:
Shot of the bracket welded and ground flush prior to paint. Cracks were vertical at center hole and horizontal through right hole.
and a shot of a pile of tiller parts.
Had a idea for an new center body panel. Will have to think on that a little more If I want to tackle making a new center body panel. Anyone ever build one from scratch??
Have a great day!
Regards,
Chris

Sorry I did not get any pictures during the process but will try to describe the method.
Soak for about two weeks with blaster several times a week.
Have a torch handy.
With the outer set of tines off I place a 6 inch long extension from a 1/2 inch socket set into the tube.
Heated the exterior of the tube, which is over the solid main drive shaft. Used a large three jaw puller to reach to the square of the tine assembly, with the screw of the puller running inside and against the extension which pushed on the solid shaft.
Then heated and turned and tapped and pounded and heated etc till it moved. Took about 1/2 hour per side. Once it started to move I put a air impact on the nut of the puller and it saved a lot of wrenching.
I believe I can start to remove the covers and see what the bearings and chain look like. I am expecting the worst.
I need to pull the drive pulley too.
Pulled another part from the rust tank. The water was frozen over, still seemed to be cleaning
Wife says I am goofy working on this stuff.
Any suggestions from folks that have had these tillers apart might be helpful?? (No not about me being goofy)
I did print out the tech manual from the OCC Tech Library. Thanks to Roland for having this available.
One of the curved supports is broken. These look to be cast so I may have to get that welded by someone? I have not tried welding cast iron and do not have the rod.
Also one or both of the covers over the bottom bearing looks to rusted out. That may be fun too!
Will do some whitetail hunting in the morning.
Regards,
Chris
Just wonderin'. Does the whitetail hunting help with the tiller? Maybe I should try that for my 1650 restoration.

Tony,
Not sure if the whitetail hunting is improved at all by having a tiller In fact I thingk I have been too much time working on Cub stuff instead of hunting. My priorities have changed as I have gotten a little older.
But I do plan to get out a few hours this weekend while we have some snow.
Regards,
Chris

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
