Wayne, go back up the page a few posts and re-read what Ol'George wrote. You drained the gas out of your float (or should I call it a sink right now?), but you didn't fix where the gas was leaking into it. You need to figure that out and repair it or it will just keep sinking. If it were me, I'd just buy a new float and be done with it.

Well I wasnt sure if I had found it or not. Turns out I did-there is no gas in the float, so it must have been entering the old patch that I redid. However there is a chunk of solder that I hear flopping around in there from my shoddy soldering job. Not sure if that's the problem now or not. I doubt I can get it out AND patch the hole thats big enough to get it out. Unfortunately floats cost $20 and I have roughly zero dollars.

I small piece of solder rattling around inside the float is not a problem. I've had a few like that. If the float is empty (floating) and gas is still pouring out of the carb it can only be 2 things. 1-The float level is set too high. With the carb off the engine, the bowl removed, and upside down, the float should be parallel with the bottom of the carb. You may need to slightly bend the little tab that pushes on the needle valve to get it set right.
2-The needle valve is not sealing and basically letting the entire gas tank drain into the carb. Either the viton tip of the needle is damaged, the seat that it seals against is damaged, or there's a hunk of crap stuck in it. Check that stuff out and let us know. |

Well this is kind of weird. The float sinks like a rock on the pivot end, but acts like there is air in the other end. if I flip it around it reverts to that position. But I cant hear any liquid at all in there (I could before I "fixed" it), and that solder rattles around and moves around as if there was no liquid. EDIT: i drilled a hole and found only a few drops of gas in there.
The needle is new and the seat looked OK except for a tiny piece of crud on the seat, but it looked like it was out of the area the needle tip actually seats. I'm going to order a new float on plastic and try to patch this one more time and see if I can get one cutting out of it. Hopefully it was just that speck of crud. |

I excavated that blob of solder and now it floats. But it took a mighty big hold to get it out, and I cant see any way of patching it.
![]() Can one of you come over and cut the lawn while I wait for my new float? ![]() |

The fun never ends and the grass never stops growing. Once I got a new float in there and adjusted it, it runs like crap. It falters and stumbles when giving it throttle. I didn't change anything except the float. This float has a fall adjustment tab as well, the other float did not. I noticed the other float fell much further, but I set this according to the specs in the instructions (~ 1 1/32 from the casing). I don't know if thats the problem or not but I do know the other one went much lower...so if it aint that, what is it?

I hope you set it at 11/32, not 1-1/32. I would imagine there would be a bit of difference there.

It says 1 1/32 so thats what I set. Like I said, that is way less then the previous float fell. So if they mean 11/32, then the previous float was even farther out of spec. But the carb ran great with the previous float, aside from the gasoline pouring out of it. It says 1 (space) 11/32 twice in the instructions so if its a typo there are two of them.

I would advise to look at both floats side by side and simply make the new float look as close to the old one as possible ( that probbably means the 11/32 ) sometimes instructions can have glaring typo's in them like that. if nothing else look at the car rebuild instructions earlier in this thread. On my total mechanical rebuild last week, my dad and I did the carb rebuild in about 15 minutes with old gaskets and two cans of evap carb cleaner (one for him and one for me) I took the bowl and he took the rest. ( I also had the fuel line, gas tank and sediment bowl to rebuilt though) just make sure your new stuff matches the old stuff.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
