I didn't get any more done tonight, 'cause I had to go pick up my new QA42A snowthrower with wheel weights and chains. Score! I've been watching for one for a while, and this was only 15 minutes from me. $200 for the whole set.
I haven't taken any pics, these are the Craigslist images. Mechanically, everything looks to be in good order. A little bent metal here and there, of course, and not too much rust. We'll be ready for the snow pretty soon... ![]() The guy that sold it to me just bought a nice 149 with a rear lift, 50A Deck, Tiller, Snowthrower, and an extra K321. He didn't have any use for the snowthrower. I invited him to join here for help on getting his 149 in order. |

I pulled the carb tonight.
I still haven't driven the 1550* yet, just started and ran it. This evening, I went to start it again (after leaving it alone for a few days) and it backfired and started another fire out of the carb. When I first rebuilt the carb, I soaked it for 30 minutes. This time I did 4 hours. And when I was done, I took a can of carb cleaner with the plastic shooter-straw on it and almost emptied a whole can spraying every darned hole in the carb. These carbs are an enigma to me. What's that hole do? Is it just a screw hole? Hell, I don't know. Shoot some carb fluid into it and see what happens... I flooded the stoopid thing. If it's not clean now, I'll have to go to CHWNY's advice and find out how many of those indentations are actually holes with some kind of hidden fixture behind them, take them out, clean it again, and then figure out how to seal them up with nail polish. Sorry CHWNY, you did give good advice and I've substantiated it with other reading. It's just ridiculous, these carburetors. Can't I just put fuel injection on this thing? heh... Just as a note: I'm doing all of this with the air filter off. How much does this affect tuning (or my inability to do so?) I can't see how I can fiddle with all of this with the cleaner on. *1550 = 1450 sub-project tractor with the 1650 project tractor's engine in it |

And btw, I understand the whole idea behind a carb. It introduces a stoichiometric mixture of air and fuel to the engine, and the engine is basically a big air pump that brings this mixture in and ignites it.
I get it. How a carb accomplishes this, and all of the quirks that make it malfunction are what ticks me off. |

Great post Dave. Stick with it. If this cleaning of the carb doesn't get it do you think something could be one tooth off inside the engine causing a timing issue? Good luck.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
