Did you have the pedal down the whole way with the e brake on while you tapped it? If you have a level yard you can unhook the brake and leave the clutch pedal down while you drive it around, if that doesn't free it up then you'll probably have to disassemble it.

Yes, to much for travel means your not taking enough pressure off the clutch plates.

yeah, thought so.. I'll try to adjust that lock nut and tighten it up some.. see what happens.. I did have the pedal in the locked down position when tapping etc...

Houston, we have CLUTCH & BRAKES! Eat an elephant one bite at a time right???

SO, i tightened the nut on the pedal bracket (that controls the compression on the spring) and i had clutch (after tapping on it a lot and some PB Blaster to break it free...) pics show (not really well) pedal depressed and driveshaft stopped, and pedal up and drive shaft spinning....

Then apparently the all thread rod (brake adjustments under the foot pads) was just out of thread... so i removed nuts, put some spacers on the rod, reapplied nuts, and wa-la.. i have some brakes.. not enough to skid the tires, but enough to stop on flat ground...

Guys, i'm like a kid at Christmas!!!!! WHOOOO HOOOO Had to share! Gotta tweak the brakes more later, but for now, i'm pleased w/the progress!

Standby for the next topic.. most likely a little less technically.... probably a good power washing! ha!

Sounds like you have external brakes, correct? If you had to shim the threaded rods the friction material on the pads may be worn very low. You should check the condition of the pads. If there isn't much friction material left you should look into relining them. I followed the instructions found in the following link and relined the brakes on my 1450.

thanks guys.. I'll check the pads. Honestly, the brakes were replaced many years ago, but the unit sat for a LONG time.. ie: brakes weren't used much.. so i suspect they're "ok." But i'll certainly check. I only worked on one side b/c it got dark on me, so piddle w/the other this evening and check those pads..

I read the forum thread on replacing / repairing them... pretty cool stuff.

Gonna finish the brakes, then move on to another phase... baby steps man, baby steps.. My 11 yr old just started football for the 6th year in Rec League, (combined, my 10th year coaching - started w/my oldest) so the evenings are shot for a good while.. but we'll get there..

my goal is to be able to plow snow w/this thing this year.. (i prob won't b/c i have a JD Farm Tractor and 4 wheeler, but back when i was a kid, while my friends were riding sleds, i was using dad's tractor to make money. i rode all over the neighborhoods making cash.. pretty cool stuff for a kid.)

ACTUALLY, other than plowing, i started my first mowing business w/this machine. I had about 11 or so yards in the neighborhood that i mowed.. i have the factory pull behind trailer that i'd put my push mower in, bungee my weed eater on top, and ride the neighborhood mowing yards after school.. later on, we bought a 1250 hydro.. but we parted ways w/it when we were swayed to the ways of John Deere. Since that time, i've always had John Deere lawn and garden tractors.. i currently have the following list of machines:

1975 Cub 1200 - current project machine
1976 Cub 1200 - bad rings, smokes like a freight train, but runs.
1983 JD ST38 / yellow deck - was my Grandfather's machine that i inherited
1998 JD 345 - 54" cut - dying rear end - (another project to complete but expensive so on hold)
2001 JD 345 - 48" cut - active mowing machine
2003 Cub Cadet 1525 / 38" deck.. (not an International obviously) but at least its the right color huh?
2009 JD 790 mid size 4x4 tractor
*for the 1975, i have a briggs engine / blower that attaches to the rear which then attaches to the discharge end of the deck to collect leaves and shoot them into a box which attaches to the trailer... BUT, that thing hasn't been used in at LEAST 20 years.

I have a line on a 1973 Cub that runs and mows... thinking i can obtain for a few hundred.. but waiting on a reply.

I'm tractor / mower poor i guess you'd say... had to build a new building last year just to keep them all out of the weather... built a 20x20 pole barn for now.

That's my story and i'm stickin' to it. HA! Don't shoot me for all the Green & Gold Tractors!
