Instead of shopping, and with a day off with soccer season over, some time in the shop today.

Junk tractors keep collecting around my shop and so thought I should just put this together to where it runs and drives, then shift to sheet metal work after that. I recon the engine and drive train is next then.

With the harness in and all the dash connections in place, I sprayed the entire back side down with Boeshield. Its a protective film that stays in place pretty well and offers another layer of moisture resistance.

On all the connections I squirted red grease up into the connector housings and on the terminals before pushing them together.

Then pulled out the engine that had been sitting in the corner for all this time. I had washed it before pulling it, so even though its not too pretty its much better than what it started as (see early pics). It got another wash, brush, scrub, soak, repeat.

The usual crud around the generator stator. And with the valve covers off, I noticed some crud buildup around one of them. This engine is going to be pulled and torn down and inspected so at this point Im just going to throw it together so I know where all the parts are. Then I can clean up and purge all the extra parts, and the shop will be much more workable after that (ya, a dream, but its a good story and Im sticking with it).

Cleaned it up a bit. Cleaned up better than I thought it would. Painted the aluminum with gloss black engine spray can. It might flake, but it looks shiny for now.

I think the screen cover over the flywheel might be upside down, will have to check that in the morning. New gas lines and filter while I am at it. Next step is the tins and then it can go back into the chassis.

Oh, look at this vane insert that was between the manifold and the carburetor, hadnt seen that before.

Nice work and progress! You're on a roll now. What again is the purpose of the vane insert? Why do some Kohler 17's have them and other don't?

Very nice build! I am a fan of the powder coating. When I put my 782 together I had all the sheet metal powder coated. Cost me $80 which I thought was a great deal.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
