Huh you bring up an issue I'm having as well. My battery gauge bounces around all the time when the tractor is running. The tractor runs well and the battery charges. I just thought that this is how these old gauges worked. Not looking to high jack this thread but can I get some advice on this?

Sounds like for some reason when he changed the battery it solved his issue with that

Agreed but after some reading it shouldn't have (I think). I've started reading more about this on the forum and others seem to say this has todo with v/r. Is this correct?

There are many things that could cause this situation. Loose or dirty/corroded wire connections, ammeter failing, bad ground, s/g brushes sticking, as well as V/R internal problems. He may have fixed a connection problem without knowing it.
