That was kinda the point..... you took a rare engine, tried to start it without putting fresh oil in it? Really? Pretty risky, and oil is cheap.

Had a guy drop a motor off at my shop once. Said he had been trying to start it and it wouldn't run. After he left, I pulled the dipstick, it showed oil, and a little over full. When we pulled the drain plug, nothing but water with about 2 qts of oil floating on the top. When the dipstick was pulled, the oil wiped off the water and showed nothing but oil. Pumped all that water through the engine and ruined the bearings. Point: Don't trust a dipstick on a motor that has been sitting.

Glad to hear the 169 fired. I agree with taking out the grenade gears. Keep us posted on the progress.

I didn't say you were stupid.

Under normal circumstances, I would have changed the oil, cleaned the carb and put new fuel lines on it before attempting to start, but all the talk about balance gears going through the blocks (especially on the 16hp) it made me a little nervous. I just wanted to quick see if it fired. Checked the oil, it was full so I fired it off carb cleaner. now that I know it "runs" I can remove the balance gears...then properly go through it. Plus that's the first engine I've seen sludgy oil in before.

Let me tell you tho...trying to get that muffler off without denting it or bending it was the most nerve wracking thing I've done while working on these things....
