After swapping the VR with the one on my 2284 I'm back to the stator as the culprit, leads are showing connection to ground which isnt right.
So I'll be pulling my first engine over the weekend. Ive already disconnected almost everything but the oil filter hoses and drive shaft. 1. Is it just the 4 blots on the drive shaft to disconnect it? any roll pins at the engine end? 2. do you have to use a puller to remove flywheel? I'd have to find one. Should have this solved soon and can wrap up this thread.(then start the next project!) Thanks-

Yep, just the 4 bolts for the CV joint. I would probably pull both ends, clean and regrease them also check the boots for any holes. If your going to pull the flywheel you will need a harmonic balance puller. Mine is a cheapo one that works okay for less then $15. Take your time pulling it and I give mine a wack with a rubber mallet every now and then to jar it loose. When you get it off you should also probably do the rear seal for all that they cost. Good luck!

Great info and pics- thanks Oak
I was figuring both ends because I need to flip the Hydro fan around, it blows toward engine. also read on some other threads it was smart to do the real seal while in there. Napa or Tractor supply for a cheap puller? Thx

Got the shaft off and flipped the Fan to the correct direction. Wonder how hot the hydro ran on this thing with fan blowing away from hydro rear end.
my parts are not as clean as yours. What do use to clean 'em? I've heard gas, carb cleaner, dish detergent.

Thanks Duke,
I took off the coil right after I snapped the pic- Tested the secondaries and they were about 26k ohms which looked like a good reading. any other bench tests I should look at while the coil is out? I noticed some used stators on ebay too. checking partstree it looks like they used the same stator on alot of engines starting with quietline on up. didn't check kabuto or Onan engine models- take care,

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
