Some shots of the tiller with the tine assemblies removed. I must say these are one of the hardest items I have had to disassemble.
Sorry I did not get any pictures during the process but will try to describe the method.
Soak for about two weeks with blaster several times a week.
Have a torch handy.
With the outer set of tines off I place a 6 inch long extension from a 1/2 inch socket set into the tube.
Heated the exterior of the tube, which is over the solid main drive shaft. Used a large three jaw puller to reach to the square of the tine assembly, with the screw of the puller running inside and against the extension which pushed on the solid shaft.
Then heated and turned and tapped and pounded and heated etc till it moved. Took about 1/2 hour per side. Once it started to move I put a air impact on the nut of the puller and it saved a lot of wrenching.
I believe I can start to remove the covers and see what the bearings and chain look like. I am expecting the worst.
I need to pull the drive pulley too.
Pulled another part from the rust tank. The water was frozen over, still seemed to be cleaning
Wife says I am goofy working on this stuff.
Any suggestions from folks that have had these tillers apart might be helpful?? (No not about me being goofy)
I did print out the tech manual from the OCC Tech Library. Thanks to Roland for having this available.
One of the curved supports is broken. These look to be cast so I may have to get that welded by someone? I have not tried welding cast iron and do not have the rod.
Also one or both of the covers over the bottom bearing looks to rusted out. That may be fun too!
Will do some whitetail hunting in the morning.
Regards,
Chris

Duke,
No luck, But the guy I hunt with saw 12 deer. While I did not see a tail.
Cheryl said I don't need another one. But the jerky was real good from the first one and its gone!

On the tiller I need to take some pictures.
I did get the drive pulley removed.
All four twist lock collars removed.
The two 1/4 round frame brackets off, Had to use a torch to burn off one of the bolts. Found that these are steel stampings so I can weld the broken one.
Removed the pivot bracket weld-ment bolt which runs through the case. It was rusted bad on the nut end. Blaster is a amazing product!
So I have several more parts ready to clean in the tank.
Almost ready to try to pull the case sides apart. Got a new 3/8 air impact wrench for Christmas so this should be a nice addition to the tool box.
I will try to get some pictures today. In between deer hunting and kickin back!
Anyone know if replacement tines are a option? Mine will be serviceable but have some wear.
(found the post from Ben's tiller on the replacement tines on ebay)
Regards,
Chris

You go, Chris! Thinking about the filler dust thing. Is there such a thing as a hood that one could hook up to a shop vac. and suck the dust from the DA?
Better yet, is there something that could be attached to the DA? If not, we should invent one, (we're rich now)
Looking better than my project right now, mines still sitting against three out of four walls in the shop, and the only reason it's not on all four, is one has the door

Default Need help!

I will get some pictures on tonight but have a question for those that may have taken a #1 tiller apart.
How does the bottom of the drive case split?
There seems to be a large cap with three bolts on each side of the case. I have removed the nuts from the bolts but the covers wild not move yet?
Any ideas?
Is there a exploded view of the drive assembly?

Todd I have one bay full of cub stuff. I like the idea of the dust collector. I have a good coating over most of the garage.
Regards,
Chris

Default Need help spliting the case?

Some shots as I try to get the case apart.
I can't figure how the covers come off on each side of the drive shaft?
Had a screw driver under the edge but cover did not move. Maybe rusted on ?
Some more pictures in next post.
Regards,
Chris

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
