Unfortuantely I need to resurect this thread, the smoking is back big time on my 1250. I checked the head bolts and they are all snug. I would call the smoke a white smoke, it smokes pretty bad about 15 seconds after startup then dissipates some, when I engage the PTO it tends to let out a big puff of smoke. Any ideas?

Sounds like rings to me. Might be time to check the tolerance of the bore.

Not sure if this helps narrow it any but it does not seem to start to smoke until after it warms up. How would I check the bore tolerance? Pull the head and use a feeler gauge? Any details would be appreciated. Also, if I need to change the rings I will be looking for some help on how hard it is and what the high level steps are. Thx

What kind of oil do you have in it!!??

I had a newly rebuilt K321 that would smoke with multi weight oil, but was perfect with straight weight 30W.

How much did you put in it? I would think your dipstick should show correct level.

If it is not overfilled with oil, it sounds like something went amiss with the new rings/piston.
It could of scored the wall, or broke a ring, or both

Was it a rebore with a new piston? did you do it yourself or had it done?
I'd pull the piston and have a look see, and measure to make sure things are right,or if done by a shop, talk to them

Wouldn't be the first time something went bad or you were provided with the wrong parts.

If memory serves be correct I believe the manual said 1.5-1.75 quarts? I checked the level when I changed the oil and everything looked ok. As far as the rings, the motor had been sitting for many years, the guy who had it before me put new rings in it. I looked at the cylinder when I changed the head gasket and it did not look damaged or scored.

Hearsay rebuilds all engines, actuality rebuilds few.
It's time to remove the piston and measure clearances and repair/replace accordingly.
The truth lies in measurements.
I wish I had a penny for all the times I have heard “it's all been rebuilt”
or “it ran great when parked”

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
