You have to wonder how some people can tear up things the way they do. The PO of the 1872 I am rebuilding gave me a notebook with all of the receipts from repairs done to it over the course of five years he owned it. He had the M18 engine rebuilt twice once with a new crank, rods, jugs and pistons, replaced the rear end once and had the one that was in it welded where he tore off the front mounts, destroyed the drive shaft and hyd lines and bought new. I have to hand it to you not many would be outside pressure washing in February. I hope you do not find to many more surprises with this one. Good luck.
Tom

Thanks Jay. "Dedicated", is that what they call a fool in your neck of the woods? It wasn't the worst, it was 50* after all...

I wouldn't be out doing the pressure washing in Feb. either, but I couldn't go any further till I got the first layer of grime off it. So there wasn't much choice this time.
I think the same thing sometimes Tom. Like what were they thinking when they did ? I guess I'm a glutton for punishment.

Yeah, finally thawed out Jon. It was a good B.S. session, we need to chat more often. I hope this one ends up being a "great machine"...

Well after pressure washing the crud off over the weekend, I fired up the 1811 to see if I could find out where some of the leaks were coming from. I left it run for at least 15 minuets, and there was nothing coming out of the relief valves.
How do I know if they are bad and need rebuilding? Do I need to use the tractor to get them to leak?...
Pictures are after it's been run.

If you can get it up on jack stands and run it forward and reverse you may find one that leaks. Other than that I'd guess the cork gasket may be the problem.

I can do that. I do know the cork gasket is bad, just didn't want to rebuild the valves if I didn't have to. If they are bad Sam, will they piss out after a while of running it?
Thanks

Yes, they will. No oil going through them unless the hydro is "in gear".

Be sure to move the up and down handle thingy while the engine is running also. I seen that happen on my 1512 that has a leaky valve.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
