When this guy said the tank had some rust in it he wasn't bullshiting, the tank has some pinholes in the bottom that I can only assume will get worse as the rust is removed. What's the best way to remove the rust so I can line the tank?

I finally got to examine them both in the daylight, one is a 71 and the other is a 77. There are several differences between the two, the 71 has 3 bolt wheels while the 77 just has a bolt through the axle like a tiller. The auger control is on the side of the 71 and on the dash of the 77, the pull starts are on opposite sides also.

I used up a bit of degreaser getting these things clean but they came out decent, I could probably get them cleaner with a pressure washer but didn't want to blow the paint off. You can definitely tell that by 1977 they started to get concerned over operator safety, the 71 can go on its own while the 77 requires the operator to hold a lever. I thought it was pretty cool that the serial number for the 71 is 1111, the yellow on the 77 has been painted at some point.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
