You have the retainer upside down in the pic. The retainer and balls should nest in the bearing cup. I don't think you need the clips, there is no load on them after it's assembled.

Yes, you have the plastic cage in backwards.
The cages you have there look to be in very good condition. If you do not use the bearing cages, you need 10 balls on top and 10 on the bottom. You need to closely inspect the cups, they get tiny little cracks in them where the balls ride, if there is any sign of cracking they should be replaced. As mentioned above, if you use new cups, the clips are of no use, the holes in the new cups are bigger than the clips. FWIW, I can't say never, but I don't ever remember putting a column back together without using new cups. And finally, someone may want to correct me, but I believe that if you use new cups, you need to use the cages, the new cups are shaped differently than the old ones and the balls tend to zig-zag in the cup, and leave a gap on one side.

Thanks guys,
I have it put in with the plastic holders turned the right way now. It is back together, just need to put it in the 4 digit. The only question I have is, are the metal cups different than the ones without the plastic cradles? I can't see any? |

The only difference that I'm aware of is, the cups that were used when these machines were being made are different than the cups that they sell now.
I bought the old style cups from my local Case/IH dealer as recently as 6 or 7 (?) years ago maybe.

Remember, I am using parts from 2 steering columns? Here's a picture I stole from the net. It shows the retaining rings with the plastic cradles?

Looks great Ronnie, man that cart is in nice clean original condition, I wonder where you got it from? It looks awefully familiar.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
