My coin is going on Jon's diagnoses. Some of that rattling could easily be the PTO, has that sound to it.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I'm back in town, but that new baby is keeping me from playing outside right now. I'll raise the idle and adjust accordingly when time permits.
thanks again for the help.

update:
new plug-no change new solid copper plug wire- no change I adjusted the valves- no change Before I did the above, I raised the idle with the idle stop screw and it seemed to help it, but it still misses. I also tried adjusting the carb, but without a tach my ears can't detect any real change in rpm while trying to dial it in. The tractor starts fast and after running it a couple of weeks the plug looks to be burning correctly. I just want it to be right.

I adjusted the carb again and I feel like I'm going in circles with it.
I got it to where I thought it was good and then moved the throttle to slow and it started missing again. It seems like it's fine until the rpm is messed with. I also noticed that when put under a load (when I drove it to its covered spot) it missed pretty bad. On this last attempt, I started with the high speed screw 2 turns out and the idle screw 1 turn out. This is per the IH Operator's Manual. thanks for the continued help.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
