well I have 44"/50" deck and they have scalped more yard than Indians did the white men and women on the frontier . My 48" deck very rarely scalps and you don't need a speed up pulley that hardly work anyway on them either

My 50 doesn't scalp but it has front guide wheels on it.

Hi Matt,
Can you offer any background on this, does the 50 have wheels up front, and is the lawn fairly flat?

Mike

I have used the 44" on a 782, 46" and 54" on a 1541.

The 44" (with gauge wheels) gave the best cut when the grass was not too tall.
The 46" worked good with or without the bagger. It handled the long grass better then the 44".
The 54" handles tall grass the best. I have only used Gator blades on it. One thing I do not like about the 54" is that it throws the grass up in the air, so it ends up flying back at me if the wind is right.

Overall the difference in the quality of the cutting is small. If I had to make a choice today I would get the 54". I have close to two acres to cut and the larger deck does cut down the time I spend doing the cutting.

I cant figure the production timeline, but I have seen some with and some without front wheels. I have to assume they added the wheels later in production, and likely because of the scalping. But I really don't know.

The information you and everyone is providing is very helpful. If I come across a clean 50" with front wheels I'm gonna buy it and try it out.

Thanks

Default 44a deck

This deck came on my 1450 so I rebuilt it. Welded on the front wheel brackets from Extreme and bolted on some Gator blades ... many here really like them and suggested them ... now I know why. Happy with the results...nice clean and level cut...minimal skelping.

IMO front wheels are a MUST!!! if you've used both styles you know what i mean. Its worth the conversion if you dont have them.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
