Today it was raining most of the day and there sat the O. I changed the oil yesterday so decided that to at least run the tractor the air filter had to be cleaned. I swear those filters had a foam type filter but this one has none and a look at the manual does not show a foam filter. I still haven't figured out how the air gets into that filter. The bottom had some oil and a little water and lots of gunk. After reading the manual the whole filter should be taken off and cleaned so that will happen tomorrow.

Yesterday I took the complete oil bath air cleaner off the "O" and discovered how it gets air and also found an air filter of sorts. It was two bunches of crinkly steel wool stuffed into the top portion of the air cleaner. I removed them and cleaned as best as I could and reinserted them. I put oil in the bottom and reattached it to the tractor so that is ready for a run. Last evening after finding a place to hang a cub cadet sign Eric and I removed the way aftermarket throttle control and cable which was broken anyway. This is in prep for a replacement throttle and cable coming in the mail. Now once we figure out what we need for axle seals and bushings it will be ready to roll on its own. We also need to address the clutch assembly as it is making a noise not akin to what it should sound like. It is fun to rediscover the workings of an Original as I have not looked at one for many years.

Congrats on the "O" the really are a lot of fun...

Tractor Supply has replacement material for the air cleaner, can't remember the price.

If the ends of your axle tubes and the insides of your rear wheels are oily/greasy it's possible the the trans-axle has water in it.

To replace the seals and axle bushings, remove the axle tubes (axle and all) from the trans-axle case, the axles are held into the tubes with "C" shaped keepers inside the tubes. The seals are in the cups that hold the carrier in the housing and the bushings are in the small end of the tube. I've never bought any seals but the bushings are kind of spendy (about $26.00 each, if I remember correctly). Might be a good idea to ask Rich or Chris if they have them.

Thanks Sam. We know we have to replace something as there is rear end oil leaking out the one side and to do the one side without the other doesent seem right. I have heard those bushings are a bit expensive but to not replace them while everything is apart doesent seem right either. Thanks for the info. I was very fortunate to find an operators manual and a service manual for engine and chassis. They were my dads from when he had his "O". Sure glad I hung on to them.

Since Eric and I just could not wait to tear into the "O", last night we undertook to remove the whole clutch assembly. Man it has not seen any lube for a very long time. We decided to try and get all the parts to do a complete fix up on the clutch. We went to the Cub cadet site and found most of what we needed except for the collar assembly and it is toast. Eric emailed Patton Acres and he had one so even that very hard to find part is on its way too. Still have to pick up some new spirol pins and we should be ready to find a press to get things apart and reassembled with the new stuff. We also have the rear seals and bushings coming so then if we need to move it we can just start it up and go. The batterys are dead in my camera and eric forgot his so no pics this time.

You are right Duke but it still will be on the back burner when we get busy with the 102. We are doing this just so we can run and move it if needed besides this work is absolutely necessary no matter when we do it. It is like a trip way back to the early 60s when my dad had one.

This is the first "O" I have ever worked on but will say it definitely is not hard to work on BUT this poor tractor was rode hard and put away wet and it just me to think people would just let them go as far as this one is but after we are done with it, it won't look nothing like it does now.

At least I can't say lets take a look back at the early 60's.

Default original serial number location?

I have a 61 original my dad bought in 78, its almost finished, the only thing i can't find is a throttle lever and cable. And also where in the heck do you find the serial number. I'm new to this forum deal sorry if i'm asking in the wrong area. I'll get some pics soon as I figure out how. It has been great fun restoring and seeing how many other people feel the same about some little ole tractor. Thanks very much Jibtorquer

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
