How about, "yeah it could be the coil, but I'd check blah, blah, blah, first" and then lead the guy through a diagnostic? |

I do not recall reading in any of the threads about the steering rod should have a bolt with a hole in it and the nut that goes on it should be a castle nut (shaped like the top of a castle) and then a cotter pin should go in the hole to secure the nut onto the bolt. No, this is not essential to have this set up and a bolt and nut will work just fine. Just an FYI as our young enthusiast learns.
Enjoy that cub.... ![]() Cub Cadet 123

OK, I'll risk it. No spark. In order of likelihood (most likely to least likely).
At least this is my routine for troubleshooting. No spark verified by pulling plug and grounding it while cranking. 1. check for 12v at positive side of coil with ignition on. If good, then 2. check for dirty points. clean with some sandpaper or a points file. (80% of the time, this is the problem). 3. Verify continuity from the points lead to a good ground when points are closed. 4. Still no spark, replace the plug (just had one yesterday that was faulty). 5. Check plug wire continuity. Replace/try another. 6. Check coil continuity and resistance. If in spec, replace condenser. If not, replace coil. OK, I checked 5 things before I got to the coil.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
