It had upper 800's when I got it but the hour meter was not working, so who knows. I was looking through the vanguard parts manual and looks like the oil pump and pickup are on that end. Maybe just an oil pump or pickup tube. I'll pull the engine and take it apart at some point, maybe fall. I can't figure what I changed installing the tube to make the stick get into something. They say it's good for old people to keep learning new things, here's my chance. I've had several Briggs 8-12.5 hp flat heads apart, maybe it won't be a lot different.

I hauled the 1641 to the garage this afternoon and pulled the engine out. I was going to wait till fall but what I have done wrong has been kanda gnawing at me. I have a vanguard manual and hope it won't take much to get to the oil pump.

Looks like I took out the plastic gear on the oil pump. The big bearing on the crank stayed on the crank when I took the case apart, should it have been pressed in the cover/case. So far I know I need 2 exhaust gaskets, a case gasket, a plastic gear for the pump and a dipstick. there is a lot of plastic shrapnel so I probably need a new oil filter.

You still may have a blown head gasket after you get done with the oil pump gear and depending on how long you ran it with no oil pressure you may have other damage. Just my 2 cents but I think you need to decide do you rebuild what you have, replace it with a used engine or put a new engine. Here is a used Vanguard that is on C-list.

PM me your e-mail address and I'll try to e-mail you the service manual. Looks like the bearing should have stayed in the cover.

I think you sent it to me when I was replacing the flywheel side seal last year, but I do have it. Anyway I'm glad I took it apart, at least now I know what happened.

Get a new oil pump. You say the the early one is NLA, I'd be willing to bet it's just an updated design and the new one will work in it's place. Just a guess on my part, but an educated one.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
