I worked on getting this running today, replaced the bad s/g,new points, plug and gas line.Carb was clean as I pulled the main jet needle and it came out without any gunk on it,at least the fuel pet cock was shutoff cause there was some gas in the tank.
Turned the key and the hour meter, headlights, tailights worked, turned it over and gave it a choke, started right up....but! funny noise coming from the internals, sounded like the balance gears, shut down and drained the oil and a few teeth fell out... So looks like I have to pull the motor, hopefully some damage was avoided. On a lighter note, the amp meter shows a charge

Hi Lew, dang, i didn't think those 169's would have had balance gears. I just took balance gears out of 12, one gear had marks from rubbing something. The crank i guess. It looked like it had 70# oil, for the noise i guess. I was hoping for a used motor, no good, skeeter fogger, must have been a real dog with 70# oil, even the governor was set more sensitive and the rod dipper looked like a banana. It ran pretty good after removing all those restrictions but was a smoker, needless to say the man who was selling me a good used motor got it back. Mike

Yes they have balance gears, took them out today, one was sitting on the bottom of the oil pan.I got lucky, not dipper damage, just a few worn teeth on the crank. I will wash the inside of the block with brake cleaner, oil up everything and reinstall the pan.I will put a magnetic oil pan plug on it. See how it runs without the gears.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
